SUSE 9.3

We are shipping SUSE 9.3 soon and I am pretty pleased. Aside from the latest goodies--gcc 3.3.5, glibc 2.3.4, kernel new SUSE boasts a polished GNOME 2.10, Mono 1.1.4, rcd and rug, Xen, and a sweet collection of in-house-developed applications, including Beagle, F-Spot, and netapplet. But the real gem is the Project Utopia stack: We have udev, D-BUS, and HAL all kicking ass, right out of the box.
Near AccidentFor various reasons, however, we decided not to switch the current block device management system to GNOME Volume Manager in this release.Never one to pass up saving the day, I just rolled g-v-m 1.2.1 and built a nice drop-in replacement package (i386 RPM, source RPM) for 9.3.

Senator Lieberman was on Meet the Press

Setting: Old Burying Ground, the oldest graveyard in Cambridge, dating to 1635. The adjacent church is preparing an Easter egg hunt.
Easter Eggs and the DeadMe: Are you really having an Easter egg hunt in a cemetery?Church Lady: Yes. Would you like to join in?Me: No, thank you. Don't you find the concept of small, snotty children trampling over the graves of our forefathers in search of crappy plastic eggs a tad bit sacrilegious and disrespectful?Church Lady: Different strokes, different folks, I guess.
Chris found an ApartmentI had this whole thought-experiment ready, to get her to weigh in on whether I could desecrate the graves of her parents, and then get her to draw a line somewhere, thereby forcing a philosophical conundrum. Can I start digging up your mother now, or do I have to wait a couple hundred years? But, seriously, how could I follow up different strokes?Me: Happy Easter!

My Pet Dog

Your investment will be worth zero dollars

The great inotify locking rewrite of 2005 is complete. The new code is insanely great, devoid of bugs, full of optimizations, and of course a towering example of locking perfection.
Inotify is in the latest 2.6-mm kernel.Patches are available for various other kernels.SUSE users can download kernel packages.Beagle is ready to roll with the latest inotify and, if you have not heard, perhaps you live in a cave, with bears, it is the greatest thing ever.Get on it.Also, I released gnome-volume-manager1.2.0, fresh off the presses for the GNOME 2.10 release. The European Council moved to adopt software patents. It is a sad state of affairs when the workers creating the patentable knowledge nearly universally despise the concept. You don't see many drug researchers fighting against medicinal patents; you don't see many software engineers fighting for software patents. Help fight.
